Looking Forward To "The Farewell"

Crazy Rich Asians was outlandish but the story and acting were more than credible for a good movie. Hopefully, it is the beginning of more genuine Asian tales and character complexities by major film studios. It looks like a good trickle from here.

The Farewell looks to be a stupendous heart-tugging movie that explores filial piety, a person’s right to know, the collective being more important than the individual in Asia, and many more nuanced Eastern philosophies and cultural ways when they clash with Western ways and norms.

Review by Melody C

If you only had three months left to live, would you want to know? According to The Farewell, it’s common to spare a loved one from a terminal diagnosis in China – and it’s not illegal.

The film, “based on an actual lie” from director Lulu Wang’s life, centers on Billi (portrayed by Crazy Rich Asians star Awkwafina), an aspiring writer in her 20s from a middle-class family who emigrated from China to New York when she was just six. Falling behind on her rent and rejected for a Guggenheim Fellowship, Billi struggles to meet the frustrating expectations of her parents (played by Tzi Ma (馬泰) and Diana Lin (林晓杰)). And just when things couldn’t get worse, she learns her grandmother, Nai Nai (played by Shuzhen Zhao (赵淑珍)), in China has Stage 4 lung cancer and only a short while left to live.

Despite Billi’s objection, the family decides to follow Chinese tradition and keep Nai Nai in the dark about her terminal illness. Instead, they stage an elaborate family gathering – the wedding of Billi’s cousin, Hao Hao (portrayed by Chen Han) – to see Nai Nai the first time in years before she passes. Afraid Billi will spoil their ruse, her parents leave her behind in New York, but Billi defies their order and flies to Changchun by herself to join her relatives and see her beloved Nai Nai.

While in China, Billi has no choice but to go along with the deception, however, the deliberate dishonesty towards her grandmother causes her to feel guilty, and continuously question the morality of it all. The internal turmoil Billi faces represents the clashes between the Western culture and Chinese culture, a theme prevalent in the film.

At one point, Billi comments that keeping a medical diagnosis from the patient would be illegal in America. However, her uncle Haibin (played by Jiang Yongbo (姜永波)) contends that the family is bearing the emotional burden for Nai Nai by lying. It’s an eastern concept of collectivism that Nai Nai practiced when her husband was also diagnosed with a terminal illness. Haibin tells Billi that spilling the secret will only rid Billi of her own guilt, as she’s thinking from an individualist point of view – common in Western culture. Though both Billi and the audience gained a better understanding of the deception from this conversation, it’s still a dilemma that they toy with throughout the film.

But Billi’s visit to China is so much more than just about her Nai Nai and exploring cultural differences, it was one of personal growth. Awkwafina’s stunning portrayal of an immigrant revisiting her homeland, straddling two cultures reminds viewers that as beautiful as it is to have a “hyphenated” identity, finding a sense of belonging is difficult when you are seen as a foreigner in the places you call home. Everything Billi remembers about her homeland is demolished, and even her native tongue betrays her – she sticks out like a sore thumb with her poor Mandarin skills, similar to many Asian Americans in reality.

Though Awkafina trades in her comedic image for one that’s serious and solemn in The Farewell, her fish out of water performance coupled with her comic timing makes the movie a dramedy. With dark humor scattered throughout the heavy film, you’ll find yourself wiping away your tears to laugh at the lighthearted jokes and silly nuances. Seeing Nai Nai, a dying woman, argue for lobster to be served at the wedding to save face was a much-needed intermission from the heartbreaking moments. Unaware of her fate, the matriarch was busy concerning herself with wedding planning and even grew concerned about the awkwardness between her grandson and his soon-to-be-bride. She even wondered how the engaged couple acts behind closed doors when she’s not there advocating for some affection.

Playful, powerful and moving, The Farewell taps into a completely different realm compared to the much-appreciated growing wave of Asian American-focused rom coms. As I watched the tear-inducing scene of Billi and her parents bidding farewell to Nai Nai, I looked around the theater made up of a very diverse audience, clearly moved by the film. It was then and there that I realized The Farewell is not just a film for Asian Americans, but everyone, with its universally relatable theme of complicated family dynamics, identity, and death.

PH Government plan to make Malaysia into an Islamic Nation

Khat is an Integral Part of Malaysia Identity????

Khat has never been an integral part of Malaysia’s identity.  Khat is Arabic calligraphy for heaven’s sake.  Computer graphics can now do all the blardy khat you need.

In the old days, only the few Melayus who hung around the royalty, knew how to read and write.

The majority were busy planting paddy, tending to livestock, fishing.

There were no such thing 100 famous Melayu writers.

We knew just one:  Munshi Abdullah whose criticisms of the royalty and the aristocracy were suppressed by nationalist pro-Royalty historians.

Khai is calligraphy.  Why do we need to make it a school subject for pupils?  Even if they want to so call keep it alive, why in Bahasa Malaysia subject?  Why not in Art subject?

This is my opinion on why they are forcing this to be integrated into Bahasa Malaysia subject.  If you don’t agree, that’s fine……

All schools must have BM as part of their subjects.  Whether its independent or government.  So, they want to familiarise everyone to these kind of writing….as a starter.  That’s why its put into BM subject which is compulsory to be learned by all schools.  Once our young are so use to this writing, then welcome Arabic….then you know where this is going…….

Smart way to infiltrate eh?

The Growing Irrelevance of Hongkong

Is Hongkong people doing the right thing clamouring for universal suffrage and more autonomy? After all, we are almost halfway there to the 50 year of “one country two systems”. If I was pragmatic and rules from Beijing, I would allow Hongkong to find its own feet – they will find that they barely have two legs to stand on.

Prior to 1997, HK was regarded as the pathway to venture into China. Paramount to that strategy was the ability to rely on Hongkong’s rule of law, adhering to global best practices when it comes to accounting reporting and industrial law. The seemingly steadfast independence of the judiciary, ICAC and the police was a strong pull factor as well.

The robust capital markets was another drawcard plus the large availability of English speakers and using mainly English as the business language.

Are those advantages still apparent?

Over the past 10 years or so we have seen Hongkong being more as a recipient of investments and deals/listings from the mainland. It seems the flow has reversed substantially.

Tourism, tourist consumption, and real estate investments have been thoroughly influenced substantially by the Chinese from the mainland. Imagine Beijing issuing an edict that their citizens stop traveling to Hongkong and to divert all new IPOs by Chinese firms away from Hongkong for the next 2 years, with zero involvement by any firms based in Hongkong. You can see property prices even halving from here.

The Greater Bay Area

In 2018, Shenzhen’s economy surpassed Hong Kong’s for the first time. While economic growth in Hong Kong rose by just 3 per cent to HK$2.85 trillion (US$363 billion) last year, Shenzhen’s gross domestic product last year grew by 7.6 per cent to 2.42 trillion yuan, or HK$2.87 trillion based on the 2018 official exchange rate.

If you have been to Shenzhen and Guangzhou, you will note that both areas are more advanced thank Hongkong in so many ways. Guangzhou is about 5 years ahead and Shenzhen even more so.

Free Port?

Indeed, the international ranking of the port has fallen over the years – from first to fifth place – behind Shanghai, Singapore, Shenzhen and Ningbo in overall throughput. This year, Hong Kong is slipping out of the top five. Clear, firm and swift measures are needed to arrest this decline.

Hongkong’s status as a re-export port economy has been dwindling over the past 10 years if you ask the experts. Just judge by the figures. The Hong Kong port’s cargo volumes fell 3.9 per cent in the first six months compared to last year, while other bay area ports, notably Guangzhou (Nansha), surged by over 9 per cent. Meanwhile, the Guangzhou government gives aggressive support, funneling financial incentives to the Nansha port, related shipping lines and the nascent maritime cluster.

Shrink, Shrank, Shrunk

Hong Kong is clearly less important than in the past. Its GDP has shrunk from 16% of China’s in 1997, the year it was returned to Chinese control, to around 2% today. That has led many inside China and abroad to conclude that Hong Kong is fading towards economic irrelevance.

Hong Kong does remain a major global financial center but it isn’t the only economic jewel under Chinese rule. Shanghai has a larger stock exchange with total market capitalizations overtaking Hong Kong’s by more than 9 trillion yuan ($1.3 trillion) this year. Shenzhen, which borders Hong Kong, isn’t far behind. Shenzhen also happens to be at the cutting edge of China’s boom in technological innovation, giving rise to giants such as the world’s largest consumer drone-maker, Dajiang Innovation, as well as gaming titan, Tencent Holdings.

Hong Kong is also a top offshore yuan trading center, leading the way for wider use of the Chinese currency in trade and finance — a priority for Beijing as it pushes for the yuan’s internationalization. Hong Kong can also do more down the road. It can foster an ecosystem for the yuan currency, developing derivatives and indexes to convince people to hold the yuan in larger amounts.

Remains Of The Day

There is still significant advantages that Hongkong has, and they will need to play them properly with Beijing:

a) Rule of law – I don’t see how Beijing can go around that issue.

b) Independence of judiciary – ditto.

c) Adherence to International Accounting Standards – This may be possible to adopt.

d) Legal disputes – This one is even worse than the first two for Beijing.

e) Free flow of funds – This can be loosened more by Beijing for foreign entities.

f) Capital markets – This can still flourish in Hongkong due to the “existence and availability” of the above in Hongkong.

Mahathir, to fill your filthy mouth you have committed treason

I have two questions for Mahathir Kutty.

1.  How many times are you going to screw Anwar’s life?
2.  You had 21 years to fill your filthy mouth, is it not long enough?

In Sodomy 1 you had ex AG Mohtar Abdullah and ex IGP Rahim Noor to help you.

Today one is dead and another suffering in pain.

In Sodomy 2 you had ex AG Gani Patail and ex IGP Musa Hassan to help you.

Today both are in deep shit in health.

Now Anwar Ibrahim has to take the blame for Azmin Ali having sex with another man.

Did you investigate or talk to PKR pimp Tian Chua the kind of women and men he sent to Azmin Ali.  For your information Azmin Ali had wonderful sex with all kinds of people without a condom too in his office when he was MB of Selangor.  If a homemaker knows this, why then you need IGP Hamid Bador and AG Tommy Thomas to rewrite Azmin Ali sex history.

Bet you, IGP Bador and AG Tommy Thomas did not know that Azmin Ali is PORNOHOLIC.

MY ADVICE TO IGP ABDUL HAMID BADOR AND AG TOMMY THOMAS.
DO NOT SCREW UP YOUR LIFE FOR PROJECTS, LAND, POSITION AND MONEY.
BE HONEST AND SINCERE TO YOURSELF AND FAMILY.
FOR EVERY WRONGFUL MOVE YOU MAKE, KARMA WILL RETURN IN FURY.
LEARN FROM THE PAST TO THOSE INVOLVE IN SODOMY 1 AND SODOMY 2.
NOT A DAY GOES BY WITHOUT REGRETS.

A Gripping Movie – Top 15 Countries by Total Exports (1960-2018)

Brilliant video. Gripping like a great movie w unexpected developments. Seems like many countries get their day in the sun. You need more than luck.

From the video I think the following were the most important differentiating factors among the countries:

– they rise if they had strong growing consumer population;

– access to and congregations of capital markets activity;

– single product boost (petroleum, oil and gas);

– advances in sciences and innovation;

– structure n rule of law (HK, Singapore, Switzerland);

– ease of trading and location of ports;

– economic growth strategy;

– investment in education

You can see all those factors being played out for the last 50 years. It is kind of easy to predict the scenario 5 to 10 years down the road.
